Yes, apparently it did.

It's very small though, and very little actually seems different after
updating to it.

Firefox (Linux based) is downloading the iso now.
Say it is 6.2 GB.

Perhaps "small" was the Media Creation Tool?

Sometimes the tool is wonderful. Sometimes it is
a pain in the ...

If I go to the download site with Linux, M$ lets me
directly download the ISO. But if M$ detects a Windows
browser, oh no no no no no.

The BOZOs still won't let you do an upgrade when
booted directly from the ISO.

And they now want "Windows 11 requires a minimum of 64 GB
of free disk space to complete the installation process"

I only had about 37 GB (64 total). I had to resize
to 128 GB.

And you know the Linux downloaded one is bigger, and
you *still* download it that way ?

Use the MediaCreationTool in your Windows VM and download it.

My C:\ESD\Download right now has

BITAF0B.tmp 4,059,863,632 bytes

and that is presumably space defined for storage of what is
making the LED flash right now. They might still download
some auxiliary (installer) files as separate download steps.

Procmon64.exe tells me, it is writing at offset 1,200,000,000 right now
so maybe 1/3rd done or so. The on-screen progress shows "33%". There
is a chance this will fit on a single layer DVD, unlike some of
the other MediaCreationTool ones.

The two ISO files in question (the Linux and the Windows),
differ in the number of SKUs on the DVD. The Linux one is
11 SKU, the Windows one 7 SKU. Neither contains Enterprise.
Since the SKUs contain so much in common, it is a base OS
plus 500MB of directory structure for the individual variants.
All eleven SKUs might use the same kernel file for example.
And, it's only stored once on the DVD, and referenced 11 times
in directory structures.

Using 7ZIP, you should learn to drill into the download
and locate the 11 SKUs.

The compression on the DVD, is normally good quality, similar
to a 7Z or a RAR quality.

The download, was just the WIM portion that I was seeing.

The final ISO is:

Name: Windows11-23H2-x64-mediacreation.iso
Size: 4,801,691,648 bytes (4579 MiB)
SHA256: 9766ABB1E79F4412267CEFBA30AB9B55722876149DEFB5115C1509C0FE9AFDC1

and that too looks too big for a single-layer DVD.

Duh !!!!! Do you really think I want an ISO I can only
use on one machine? Did you forget I am a consultant
with lots of disparate customers? And the turkey fit
fine on an 8GB stick.

Sometimes the creation tool is wonderful and sometimes
it is a total pain in the ass.

As a consultant to small business, I only have
Home and Pro users. So will care about other
versions, if and when I EVER (which I doubt)
come across them. So don't care.

Don't care. When I need the #%*$ing ISO, I need the
#%*$ing ISO. Yes I can boot of a Linux LIVE USB
if I am stuck with the creation tool nonsense at
a customer site. But then I have to figure out the
magic f key to get into bios. Have I mentioned that
there is a Lenovo laptop where you have to bend out
a paper clip and press a recessed button to get
into BIOS.

Have I mentioned that sometimes the creation tool is
wonderful and sometimes it is a total pain in the ass?

Thanks for the help anyway.

They presume you will be putting it on a USB stick.
Computer have not shipped with CD/DVD drives for
years now. (I occasionally get calls to replace
bad ones on older machines, so they are still around,
unlike floppies.)

Oh, and the BOZOs can't be bothered with arranging the
ISO so you can DD it straight to a flash drive.
(Woeusb and Rufus work well.)

Soon as I got enough room on the (virtual) disk drive,
23H3 installed pretty flawlessly

Well, if your update checker indicated it as an update 22H2-23H2...

...and if it seemed different after updating to 23H2
=> Not seeing much difference is normal
=> The 23H2 enablement package is small(i.e. most of 23H2 is already
in 22H2, just not turned on - not 'enabled'. Been that way ever since
enablement packages have been utilized.

Assuming you looked at any Windows Update History where Microsoft
details each and every monthly(cumulative and preview updates)
=> Core system files are common to the prior version of the same os.
e.g. Win10 22H2, 22H1(19044, 19045) are common core system files. The
same applies to earlier versions backward to version 1903

It seems you indicated you 'upgraded' Win11 from 22H2 to 23H2 before you
mentioned the ISO or the MCT, that(if true) would seem to indicated the
upgrade was done by the enablement package(very small and fast upgrade)
- no ISO, x.exe involved

Small snag.

I get the distinct feeling this ISO is 22621 and not 22631.

Maybe we even got different versions ?

https://pureinfotech.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/winver-check-23h2-windows-11.webp

Mine didn't seem to roll back, but it did misbehave in the VM
so I can't be sure. I have a Windows.old yet Winver says 22621.

This is what I got in July with mediacreationtool.
What are the odds the thing would have *exactly* the same size.

Name: Windows11-x64-Jul2023.iso
Size: 4801691648 bytes (4579 MiB)
SHA256: 7F1C44908A864C55F614C8D68796C63F50818992C10E130B10424250D38CA7A5

This is what I got when this little exercise started today.

Name: Windows11-2xH2-x64-mediacreation.iso
Size: 4801691648 bytes (4579 MiB)
SHA256: 9766ABB1E79F4412267CEFBA30AB9B55722876149DEFB5115C1509C0FE9AFDC1

In your new 6GB ISO, look in sources/install.esd

[1].xml <=== release number info. 22621 is 22H2. 22631 is 23H2.

It's easy to get in there with 7ZIP. While the extension is .esd,
it is not likely to be encrypted like Windows 8 era was.

Installation Assistant failed for me multiple times, including after a
reboot. I tried running setup.exe from the mounted ISO once, prior to

I will have to hope Windows Update's eventual release of 23H2 will
work. Can't do an in-place upgrade no matter what I try.

What graphics card ?

Try "dxdiag" and see if the thing uses a WDDM driver or not.
XDDM is a really old driver. WDDM is up around 3.1 or so,
for a video card that is still in support.

That's what stopped the Optiplex 780 from getting W10 22H2,
was graphics.

What annoyed me, is the attempt rolled back, and I couldn't
figure out the reason from the logs. And of course the "setupdiag.exe"
downloaded utility, didn't do anything when I ran it. It
is supposed to read the logs and summarize the failure for
you.

Is your Windows Update currently running ? It still functions ?

NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030

It checked and didn't find any updates overnight, after the first
attempts to install 23H2.

I meant it's very small if you install it from Windows Update.

Of course it's the usual multi GB if for some reason you download the ISO.
