Yes, thanks for the explanations Ian, taf, and everyone else who has
provided instructions and suggestions.
I installed Thunderbird and signed up for Eternal September and can read
the sgm posts via Thunderbird. To me this seems much less convenient
than using Google Groups. I know this would seem like a big change to
those who have used newsgroups for many years, but couldn't we just set
up a regular Google Group for the same purpose as the
soc.genealogy.medieval newsgroup? It seems unlikely that new people will
find our posts and participate in our conversations if the only way to
see the new posts and to reply is with a newsgroup reader.

I for one am looking forward to the end of the link to Google Groups and
with it the spammers.
