For me, an AIIRB (losartan) has fewer side effects than any other type
of drug, having tried them all. I still get a cough from the ARB but
it's not as bad as with alpha or beta blockers. Amlodipine causes a lot
of oedema in my legs and calcium channel blockers nearly killed me with
angioedema.

In addition to the losartan I now take 2 diuretics: spironolactone &
indapamide. The spiro was added last year by the renal consultant after
a spike in late 2021.

I found during hay fever season that my side effects from the above were
less severe when taking antihistamines so I take ceterizine all year
now. I seem to be taking 3 meds to counteract the side effects of the
ARB[1]

Hardly add salt to anything and we read all the labels. If we do add
salt, it's low salt (potassium).

Meat here is mostly pork. So not very red :-)

Beef and lamb are so expensive, we hardly ever eat them.

We eat quite a lot of tinned tuna, mackerel etc. Not much fresh fish.

We have chicken stir fries and a chicken curry now and then.

We already alternate days.

We avoid processed food like the plague. Don't drink or eat sweet stuff.
Neither do we use sugar, except in making bread.

Beer...

Slight problem. I do walk when it's wet in the countryside, but I'm
limited by fucked knees and feet. I like cycling and cycle quite hard. I
can also cycle all day without a problem, whereas walking is limited to
20 minutes.
> Learn Passive Muscle Relaxation.

Sounds like yoga.

Giving up my stressful job 20 years ago was a good idea.

But thanks, I'll make an effort to eat more fruit. BTW, the beer
consumption is down 50% on back then.

wine is fruit and full of lovely carotenoids, especially red[1]

[1] just cool it to 15C at least. Some is actually pretty good chilled even
more, such as beaujolais

I dumped the enalapril because of a dry, annoying cough (and itching).
Moved to losartan, which costs loads more.

We don't drink that froggy stuff.

Here, they drink red wine chilled (at 0ºC). Even with ice. And often
mixed with lemonade (tinto de verano).

Maybe I'll replace one of my nightly 7 or 8 beers (33cl) with a glass of
Rioja. I'll start today.

Well, that’s a pretty good diet!

I’m not sure what did your knees in, but potato and tomato can aggravate
joint problems. Unfortunately they are found in many foods either as a main
ingredient or an additive.

Even potato starch as a dusting does my Heberden’s Node in with severe
pain, and tomatoes can make my joints flare up.

Cod liver oil can help, but it won’t be an overnight improvement.

I found losartan worse for fog-headedness (for relative values of
clearness of head usually) than Valsartan which I think is even more
expensive - though that's only a burden on those in the UK still paying
tax (as do I).

The Amlodipine was added to the Valsartan in 2020. Then the next quack
visit they said try just Amlodipine at twice the dose and ditch the
Valsartan. It did seem to affect my calves for a while, but I must have
accommodated to it. Still get the lurid, surreal, WTF? when I wake up
from them, dreams and the gut gurgles. Pretty sure it's not clinical
sleep apnoea.

Sleeping fewer and fewer hours these days. Nose strips may help a little
but not conclusive. Almond milk before bed similarly, but taking on
fluid last thing brings problems in itself.

Have still got some zopiclone from when my hip and thigh were agony but
try not to pop one unless in extremis.

Oh well, time to run the long symptoms list (latest is hands that both
seem to have gone arthritic (not just the 'off' damaged left one) past
whatever medic is available at our GP practice again. It hasn't been the
same one two appointments running for years.

Reducing grip strength is an indicator of getting really over the hill
apparently.

Currently preparing mushroom and broccoli sweet and sour rissoto. Yummy.

Forgot to mention, because of where we live, we consume lots of extra
virgin olive oil. My breakfast weekdays is toast (home made bread) soaked
in olive oil.

Talking of olive products, buy now. The crop this year will be null. All
the flowers fell off because of the drought. Prices are set to triple.

Wow! Average here across the pond is 3400mg/day (sodium, Na), and we
think our diet is deadly.

Doctor wants me at or below 1500mg/day. Some days I can get under;
some days I don't.

There's an app for that: *MyDashDiet* by Prestige.

You save a repertoire of dishes you normally eat at your typical
serving size and log them when you finish them. The result is a
running total of macros (calories, carbs, fat, protein, sodium)
consumed for the day. You can scan UPC barcodes from the package so
you don't have to enter the nutrition labels yourself. Many branded
products are already in the database in the cloud. Otherwise, you have
to choose from similar dishes or generics by keyword search. But many
fast-food-outlet menus are already in the database, too.

The app syncs with the cloud so you can keep up-to-date on more than
one device, supposing you carry a work phone during the day and a
personal phone in the evening or *vice versa*.

Drawbacks to the app:

+ It promises *.csv file export, but I don't think that works.

+ It doesn't distinguish plant fat from animal fat, but then neither
do nutrition labels.

+ It's really hard to get enough protein.

+ It's really easy to get too much fat.

+ Serving size is a SWAG unless you weigh portions, so getting to
factor of between 0.5x and 2x of the actual is an achievement. What
the app is good for — really — is just elevating diet to
top-of-mind.

For example, yesterday, I ate 75% of my calorie quota, 90% of carbs,
75% of fat, 55% of protein, and 150% of sodium. ¡No bueno!

Best thing for me is the "Reduced Sodium" and "Lightly Salted" snacks.
There's a brand of frozen entrées called Healthy Choice that has the
least amount of sodium of processed foods in that category. I stretch
them with Annie Chun's sticky rice, which is not salted. I buy
reduced sodium whole-wheat bread because the low-salt crap that I bake
at home is disgusting, and I spread it liberally with Jiff Natural
peanut butter, which is supposedly low in sodium and added sugar. Am
I gonna die?

This ailment top trumps is a tad depressing when several UKRMers have

Home-cooked chicken curry here, washed down with hibiscus tea. Fresh-fruit
salad for dessert (have that every day).

I’ll pass that tip on to the quartermaster…

(a little later…)

Mrs Spike says thanks for the tip. The brands we use are currently on
discount, so she will order ahead at that price for the next four weeks.
She did the same when Ukraine caused a frisson in olive oil.

I can’t speak for cholesterol or salt, but ISTM that if you don’t eat
potatoes and don’t get arthritic pain, then you eat potatoes and the pain
comes back, it doesn’t make sense to eat potatoes, suffer pain, and claim
that there’s no researched evidence to support the link.

Just look at the various reactions to medications in this thread, different
people react differently to the the same medication; it’s no different with
foods.

Sometime… It happens to all of us.

The app sounds to be very comprehensive, an interesting way of keeping tabs
on stuff. I put mine on a spreadsheet, which works as we keep to a dietary
routine - Mrs Spike has different dietary requirements to me, and we’ve
worked out a schedule of meals that we can both eat, or at least share in
large part inasmuch as her carbs could be potato and I’ll have plain white
rice, for example.

you seemed to be claiming a generalisation to everyone rather than your
personal experience

I am quite happy to accept specific people can react to certain foods but I
want to see some evidence before a whole food group is written off as
harmful.

What I’m saying is that it’s everyone for themselves. You (general) avoid

alternately going without them for a time, then start eating them again.
That’s all the evidence you (general) need.

I try to cut salt back, some things need it. It's an issue if kidneys are sub
optimal.

Given from what we know from Snowden it is them or the Septics, probably both. I
