Nomenclature seems to be of the utmost importance here. Different words
mean different things to different people. Arabic translations seem to
be complicating things further.

Ah ok, the one I was referring was a protest in London. Some of the
protesters were chanting "Jihad". A police spokesman reckoned there are
several translations in English (can't remember what they were) and not all
of them are warlike. So they didn't arrest anybody. But next time......

Interesting. We talk about 2 countries separated by a common language,
but the difference is probably far more extreme in Arabic countries. And
perhaps Chinese. Or Spanish.

When I was in uni, one of my flat mates was studying Spanish. He was pretty
fluent in very proper, written Castilian Spanish but needed work on his
verbal communication. One of my friend's from my course grew up in Colombia
& Venezuala. They used to meet up so the student could practice his spoken
Spanish. The student used to come back from classes and say he had been
chastised for using a vulgar, S.American colloquialism.

They tell me that Japanese, although written the same, is spoken
differently by men and women. It has been known for Western men to stay
in Japan for a while and immerse themselves so deeply in the culture
that they learn to speak Japanese, from their girlfriends. Thus they
end up speaking Japanese like a woman.
No idea if this is true but then I've never been one to let the truth
stand in the way of a good story.

Yes I know, but this was at the same demonstration, I used it as
another example of the terminology at the moment. There seems to be
several proscribed lists at the moment of words and phrases one
must/must not use. eg. BBC seems to be getting very tied up about the
(non) use of the "T-word". I wouldn't dare to offer an opinion either
way but I can appreciate that somebody is taking the trouble to think
about things like this.
