Last year my venerable home theatre PC died. I took advice on here,
and instead of moving into the 2020s, I replaced the PSU and brought
it back to life.

Today, I switch on the AV amp and TV (the HTPC never turns off) and
was greeted with the Media Center screen as usual, but it didn't
respond to any input, either from remote or keyboard. Not even a
ctrl-alt-del.

So I powered it off and on again, and now the main power light comes
on and the fan runs, but nothing else. It doesn't POST

I dunno where to start troubleshooting this, but I guess no POST =
dead motherboard?

Very droll

As the previous thread revealed, I simply don't understand how people
watvh TV nowadays. Does everybody stream everything? Faced with
such almost unlimitless choice, I don't think I would ever find
anything to watch. I need something to curate content for me, which
is, essentially, what tradititional TV channels do, isn't it?

We find the Radio Times useful in that respect.

We are pretty much old school here, we watch the traditional live TV,
but do have the TV connected to the net to watch stuff we've missed, or
occasionally, films. (Waynes World last week, which I thought was still
good.)
I've never paid for any streaming channels/sky/cable, we're pretty
content with what we've got available, but we're probably not typical TV
users, as it's rare to be turned on before 9pm.

I used to use Freview and a PVR in Cheltenham but the terrestrial signal
here is poor. I used to watch a mix of live TV and recorded stuff. So, I
am streaming everything now, often live broadcasts.

> We find the Radio Times useful in that respect.
>

I use the RT website and watch some linear TV e.g. I could stream all
episodes of This Town now, but I am watching the broadcast on a Sunday
evening. It fits my routine.

I am using a Roku stick and BBC iplayer to watch linear TV as the
freeview signal here is rubbish, plus it will be switched off soon so
not worth paying for a new aerial. It's not so easy to channel flick as
switching invovles menus rather than doom scrolling the RPG.

I also watch C4 & ITV occasionally "live" via their streaming services
on the Roku. The disadvantage of not using a PVR is that you can't FFwd
through the ads. Mostly live sport so ad breaks are handy for comfort
and coffee breaks.

As for curating my viewing, I tend to read the TV section of the
Guardian to direct me towards stuff on the subscription channels I might
like, then look for a hooky download. My scruples go out of the window
when it comes to fleecing big media corps.

Most of the stuff I watch or listen to is from the BBC. Radio 4 or the
derivative podcasts are on for much of the daytime as I potter about. I
might watch one or two hours of TV in the evening, usually BBC1, 2 or 4
so there is little interest in watching much else. Maybe one or two
episodes a week of stuff sitting on the laptop.

Not as a rule, no.
I usually record a few series and we can watch them at leisure.

So we normally do "catch-up".
If I miss something ( a series start), then I will use iPlayer/itVX
whatever do get it.

No subscription services, just CBA.

Yep, and I'm guided by that.

I briefly wondered if a flat battery could cause this problem.

https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/can-a-dead-cmos-battery-cause-a-pc-to-not-boot.3703445/

Maybe. Possibly?

Either way pretty cheap to rule it out (but probably a dead motherboard or maybe a poor
connection from the PSU?)

Personally I've got a BT 'TV Box' which:
- Records stuff I'm interested in[1]
- Presents all of Freeview's channels
- Gives me access to Netflix/Prime/NowTV subscription channels
- Lets me search for content across all channels through a single interface.

Without this set-top box (actually it's on a little shelf under the 'set')
aggregating everything to a single 'viewing point' I'm not sure how I'd
watch TV with multiple different input devices.

Frankly though, TV really does little apart from send me to sleep. I'm sure
there's a lot of 'stuff' out there but as you say curating it is the issue.

[1] One of the shit channels has started rescreening Budgie;last time I watched
it was in 1986? It's not aged that well, the sexism and racism is jarring.

my PVR was a Humax rebranded as a BT Youview box. Bought when I had BT then
Plusnet internet. It worked well for several years but got dog slow and
then stopped working with eveything but iplayer after the other apps used
used tech it could not support. I would still use it if I had a decent
terrestrial signal at the new place. 15 thrown at a Roku stick seems to
work keeping the ancient Samsung TV in service.

Pretty much don't watch any live TV anymore apart from the odd bit of news.

Qbit with RSS and a Plex sever do the rest.

I haven't watched actual live TV for at least 15 years. Closer to 20,
probably

Ah, ok, so you've knitted your own solutions.

I still like WMC at lost, and apparently there's a user community that
supports it on Windows 10 & 11. Or I might go to NextPVR (which grew
out of GBPRV, which I used to run on my old Shuttle PC about 20 years
ago!)

Ah, that's worth a look - thanks!

The machine hadn#t been moved, so I can't really understand a
connection going shonky

I tried a few other things
- removing the memory did get me some bleeps, which means the mobo is
trying to do something
- the PSU is giving 12.5v on the yellow wires, and 5v on the red,
which is (apparently) correct

I built this machine when I was recovering from broken legs etc, which
was 2008, so it's pretty old now. The battery could certainly have
failed

Sometimes but inevitably there are programmes I want to see that are on at
the same time so I use catch up as well instad of the PVR. I use "watch
from the start" if some distraction delays me from tuning in.

Technically not until 2030 but a lack of investment in exisitng
infrastructure means terrestial signals are pretty shit in a lot of places

I thought I was a die-hard live broadcast watcher, but it occurred to me
the other day that I haven't watched Freeview regularly for months, live
or recorded. Nearly everything comes out of a Roku stick these days.

I rarely watch terrestrial broadcast anymore, but I do have a rooftop
antenna, as almost everything is available over streaming now. News is
usually Sky via a their app on a Fire Stick, entertainment is almost
exclusively through the usual streaming services.

Trouble is, there's that many bloody streaming services out there.

Yes, terrestrial/aerial TV reception is terrible here in Southern
Scotland in between hills, so we went to Freesat, which works perfectly,
however, that is going, no date put on it yet, but no one is putting up
new satellites when the internet is being used by many for TV reception.
I didnt know until recently that Sky no longer supply satellite dishes,
their content is all internet provided for new customers, so I suppose
once Sky satellite has gone, Freesat will die pretty quickly soon after.
