We take ours (or Amazon Firestick) with us when we rent a holiday cottage -
then we can choose to carry on watching a series we may have started before we
went. And it can connect to the wifi in the cottage and if not the hotspot on
my or K's phone. Lots of options.

The "set top box" I guess has no place in the modern world unless it has a DVD
slot or hard drive recording capability.

Dunno, not gone that route, but I doubt you can bypass adverts if
streaming straight from ITVX etc.

But maybe if you record it, you can? (after all the VM box is a Tivo,
and that lets me skip ads.

ah ok - i thought because you said you'd probably have internet-only and a PVR
that you already had the recording bit sussed :)

You need a decent source, qbit & Plex.

You'll never see an advert again.

Humax PVR for terrestial TV, largely recorded and watched later.
Chromecast for Netflix (I feel I ought to subscribe to at least one
channel), iPlayer etc and Kodi running on a Pi, reading from an NAS
disk, for, er.., other sources.

I yield to the temptation to join the "old folks" thread about TV.

Yes, over-the-air (OTA) TV is essentially dead except in big cities.
Here in the USA, Congress keeps selling "bandwidth" to cell-companies.
That bandwidth comes out of the spectrum that used to be allocated to
OTA TV. The result is crowding in the TV spectrum that remains. More
stations that were already close enough geographically to cause
interference are now assigned frequencies too close to be detectable
by the cheap digital tuners in cheap digital TVs. Add the uncertain
state of the atmosphere due to the active sun-cycle phase and
transient effects of weather (which I put down to changes in
capacitance between sky and earth) causing skip from behind the
antenna and from beyond the direction it is pointing. Add increasing
interference from cell communications and the Internet of Things (IOT)
in my house and neighboring houses. It's a wonder anybody thinks OTA
TV is still doable. Notwithstanding big-box retailers sell rabbit
ears rated to bring in signals from 65 miles away, and the unwashed
public will buy them (and return them) oblivious to the fact that the
horizon is closer than that!

Thus, digital TV can be seen for the scam that it was and is.

No, we have something better now: Roku, which gives you the
opportunity to "curate your own" content from the plethora of "free"
programs continually made available. Yes, you have to watch
inconvenient commercials. Well, guess what! I never stopped, so I
have no sympathy.

In the morning, the Haystack News channel feeds me "news" stories
(interspersed with commercials) one after another about homicides in
the big city (chosen from my mailing zip-code), latest antics of His
Orangeness, conspiracy theories, the stock market, conflicts overseas,
demonstrations at home, and the latest in local human-interest drama.
I pretend to curate my own view of the news by fast-forwarding to the
next commercial until the whole thing starts over. On a bad day, I
can see an hour's worth of news plus commercials in less than 45
minutes.

There's a lot of "free" programming available. I'm (re)acquainting
myself with old movies, truthy history, junk science, religious
agendas, and reality programs. There are multiple versions of most of
Shakespeare's plays and the books of Charlotte Brontë and Jane Austen.
It just goes on forever. I find myself watching very familiar stories
repeatedly.

I'll tell you one of my favorites was /James May's Toy Stories/ from
BBC Two where he enacts childhood fantasies with kids' toys. Riding
the electric Meccano (erector set) motorcycle around the Isle of Man
was a stitch.

Kodi works nicely on a chromecast too. I like the way it keepster track of
which episodes I've watched already.

It seems it could still be an option, but not one they will support for
much longer:
<https://www.gbnews.com/tech/sky-q-job-cuts>

<https://advanced-television.com/2022/09/23/sky-to-end-satellite-installations-in-uk/>

From another page
"Up until mid-2022, a visit to the pages on Sky's website that promote
its TV packages would yield a mix of Sky Q satellite deals and the new
kid on the block: Sky Stream. That's just not the case anymore. In fact
the only Sky Q deals available at all – and never put front and centre –
are so-called 'Sky Q Lite' bundles. Sky Q Lite is a cut-down version of
its previous Sky Q satellite service. You can still add on everything
you need to make it a powerhouse TV package, but the fact Sky is no
longer offering multiple varieties of Sky Q with different focuses
(entertainment, movies, sport and so on) is telling of a broad winding
down. "

It's a pity that Freesat and later Freeview are going and forcing people
onto streaming as, currently, when your broadband goes up the creek you
can always look to see what's on telly.

I sense an opportunity for a Tiktok video explaining how to read a book
in case of emergencies.

Actually installed on the Chromecast? I didn't know that. Might be an
option for if/when one of the vintage Raspberry Pis dies.

Yeah, that's just casting :-/

.... but these describe actually *installing* it:
https://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Install_Kodi_for_Android
https://troypoint.com/install-kodi-on-chromecast-with-google-tv/

The implication seems to be that it needs to be one of the 4th gen
Chromecasts with Google TV, those actually run Android.

Those new Chromecasts run on Amlogic S905X3 or S805X2:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromecast#Model_comparison

.... which suggests they should have hardware support for the majority of
recent video codecs:
https://kodi.wiki/view/Android_hardware#Compatible_chipsets

I might try it on my latest Chromecast in my Copious Free Time.

Not sure what all the fuss is about there, just load the Kodi app from
Playstore, takes about 35secs.
CX file Explorer is in Playstore too, all works on C Cast.
