It's not that :-(

Nor is it the PSU, as I robbed a PSU out of another (dormant) machine,
and tried that. So I reckon it's probably the mobo :-(

I don’t even do the NAS thing any more. Kodi links directly to my
real-debrid account and streams directly from such “other sources”.

Hmmm, interesting. Am I achieving roughy the same by downloading from "other
sources" to a 1drive folder and streaming to Kodi from there or am I
missing something here?

It’s just an extra step. I go to the source, set Real-Debrid to download
and it’s done. Real-Debrid offers a link that you can add in your Kodi
videos section so that all of your hooky stuff is directly available.

For instructions, type "http folder" on https://real-debrid.com/support

You just need a decent source, plus rutorrent and OSMC. Or Qbit and
Plex, I suppose.

I keep most stuff on a Synology NAS running Plex, I sprang for the licence
albeit the free version is adequately usable. If something catches my eye I'll
obtain a copy and bung it on the NAS. Mostly watch on a PC at the moment, it
will stream to my Chromecast on the TV but that's hogged 99% of the time by
Madam 's penchant for Chinese drama.

I've got a Gen1 but it was not working very well streaming iplayer etc from
my laptop, hence looking for something else. A 15 punt in Arogs for a Roku
Express Gen-onebeforecurrent is working okay as I do not need to fire up
the laptop to watch telly.

As I mentioned before, your blog inspired me to build a media PC around the
same time (long since broken for parts). That mobo developed problems with
"bulging caps" which I had to replace. Diagnosis was quite straight forward
as I recall.

> watvh TV nowadays.

I have pretty much stopped watching television. Linear or streamed.

The odd film on a DVD, or the Talking Pictures channel (which I record
on an old Humax PVR and then fail to watch).

I did watch all of Ghosts recently (which I liked very much) but I did
that at an episode at a time because I find binge watching a bit
tiresome.

I cancelled my long running Radio Times subscription over a year ago
(nearly two). Something I'd been taking since the mid-90s. It felt a
bit like the time I cancelled the milk - end of an era.

Interesting

While I can plug bits of PC together, diagnosing 'bulging caps' is
significantly beyond my skill set

Can you describe (or even remember) how you did this diagnosis,
please?

plenty of Youtube videos showing what to look for
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bulging+capacitors

very easy to spot as the body of the capacitor has a cross pressed into the
metal top. This provides a weak point for when the liquid electrolyte boils
if the internal insulation breaks down. In most cases the once flat top
becomes domed under the pressure. In extreme cases, the top of the can pops
at the centre of the cross.

These capacitors are polarised so if replacing them, make sure you put them
in the right way. I used to see some spectacular effects when they were put
in the wrong way during production at Xerox and got a bit excitable when
powered up in the test rig.

Yes, exactly. A bulging top and maybe some weeping. I seem to remember there
was a bad batch of electrolyte around that period. The caps themselves cost
next to nothing but soldering was a bit tricky as the mobo is in several
layers.
