Ah but they do! It is well worth disconnecting and reconnecting the
main PSU and other 'significant' connectors (HDD etc).
Having previously done this sort of stuff for a living, I developed a
mantra of "90% of electrical faults are actually mechanical faults" -
typically bad connections, chafed wires, failed solder joints etc.

OK, can you explain, slowly for the aged, how "everything comes out of
a Roku stick" actually works, please? What content do you watch, and
how do you access it, how do you select it, etc?

Understood. I unplugged the PSU-motherboard connector, and
reconnected. A PC doesn't need any disks or other devices to POST.

With the mobo disconnected, the PSU fan didn't even start. I think
this is down to a simple pin on the interconnect that tells the PSU
there's something at the other end. But that at least proves that
(most of) the connection is good

Another thing, amongst the many, that can stop your boot is the RAM not
sitting in its socket properly. Over many cycles of heat/cool the RAM
can, due to expansion, creep out of the socket, so give them a wiggle.
If you have multiple RAM sticks try starting with just one in the first
socket.

I had the option of installing Openreach fibre to the property when I moved
in here which I took. A streaming stick was the most cost effective way to
keep using my perfectly serviceable, but very, very thick, Samsung TV
going. Especially when Roku had brought out a new version and Argos were
flogging the previous one for 15. A combination of future proofing the
internet connection whilst keeping the 15 year old TV going, that I bought
from a friend in 2014 for 50 when she moved in with her now husband.

the stick is much like a tablet or phone with media apps. Uses wifi to
connect to my router and has a USB connection for power (most TVs have a
USB socket). HDMI to TV input. Some apps are preloaded and you can go to
the Roku Store and download many more. Some are free, some have ads, some
are subscription only.

I use the BBC iplayer, ITVx C4 and occasionally C5 apps for TV, watching
live or catch-up. I also use Youtube, Spotify and BBC Sounds apps. You can
also stream content over wifi from a laptop etc.

All menu driven much like you see on a phone using the same app. Controls
are via the remote using the arrows etc.

You don't get a multi-channel RPG so I use the Radio Times website for
that.

I have exactly the same questions, plz.

(Currently have tv via the air. 'WiFi' is via mobile dongle. - No
'broadband' available...)

Having just realised that we've 'crossed in the post' (due to a medical,
phone 'review' [so cross threads too]), as I suspected, some form of
wired/fibre internet/broadband is required?

In which case, its a non-starter for me.

Yes, sounds it - but it is always worth a try.
Even I almost got caught out the other week by a 'failed' indicator
bulb. Power appeared at the socket connectors and bulb was not open
circuit so eventual fault found was an imperceptibly corroded spade
terminal...

no, the Roku connects via wifi so you can use a 4/5G device as a hotspot.
Many people take them in their motorhomes and use public wifi or 4/5G

even if you needed a wired connection to a device, there are plenty of 4/5G
routers available with LAN outputs.

Oh, right, thanks - I wasn't expecting that
I'll have a closer look then

You know the little Android TV boxes you've used in our apartments?
Like that, only with a limited number of streaming service available.

Ours can run any app, and withint most of the apps there exists the
possibility to record and/or download the content.

As it happens, we view most of our content through the Swisscom app
that we subscribe to giving us hundreds of channels, including pretty
much all the UK ones (barring Eurosport and Sky) with a week of replay
and almost unlimited internal recording, so we rarely ever need to
store anything outside of it.

Talking of which, I discoverd that Quest channel had a whole day of
live British and World superbikes last weekend, so enjoiyed a whole
evening of it yesterday. Proper detailed coverage, all the support
races etc. I do hope this continues.

There's a switch (probably a power management module of some sort) that
the PSU supplies standby power to, that tells the PSU to switch from
standby to fully powered-up when the ON button is pressed. That way the
mobo can also shut itself down. If the mobo is disconnected then the PSU
won't get a startup signal.

I only learned that it was via the mobo itself in the last week (though,
thinking about it, it's the most logical way) since I had to replace the
PSU on this very PC a couple of days ago.

Not sure why anyone goes with those branded boxes. There's literally
hundreds of mini TV boxes on Amazon (or the retailer of your choice)
many for under 20 Euros. I've got five of them in operation at the
moment, a coupld have had to be retired over the years as the apps
upgrade and don't support older Android versions, but at that price
it's no big deal.

I was just complaining to Champ a few weeks ago that I couldn't get
any decent Englisg coverage of bike racing, with the SBK offering on
itv4 (I think it was) being so editted and with so little content
apart from the actual race highlights that it made it impossible to
follow the season unless you really made an effort to do so elsewhere
as well.

Not sure how long Quest has been included in our package, but it's not
normally a channel I look at, so it was just by happy chance that I
came across it.

Do you have a link ?
On their website it looks like you can still buy a new SkyQ (satellite)
subscription, although they do also have 'streaming only' products.

Not what you want to hear, as we are on Virgin we just use the
associated Tivo.

I'm due for my regular 18month "fuck that price" conversation soon,
might be easier this year as there are (apparently) competing Full Fibre
alternatives.

I've looked at other options, Freeview etc, but as I don't have an
aerial it is an extra outlay :-)

If it was just me, I would only have internet and set up a PVR (probably
with a Pi).

As it is, for (currently) £60/m we get 100Mbs + basic TV package. We
also get a mandatory phone line (not been plugged in since 2015), which
is usually my 1st port of call for a new discount.

Just for comparison purposes, £65/m here gets 250 internet & mid TV package with land line over
internet. Due for renewal next month.

I did a check yesterday and they are offering the same package for new customers at £40/m

Ta.
Where is "here"? (I can't remember)
And I presume you are quoting VM?

> I did a check yesterday and they are offering the same package for new customers at £40/m

That will be because there are some competitiors, I'll be doing a switch
comparision and hitting them with that. Now that it appears I can get
fibre from others I will be more keen to use the cancle me option.

Although it will mean getting a PVR to replace the VM one.

Quality innit. Although 20 Euro does sound tempting. Chromecast is 40 Euro
and you can get all apps from playstore. I've only ever tried one android
box (Minox) and it couldn't get a lot of apps as it wasn't 'approved'.
Gen 4 chromecast is brilliant IMHO.

I did get offered a renewal online for £81/m which made me chuckle.
