A bit late replying, but anyway: when I started on statins, I had what I
can only describe as microcramps - muscle cramps but only affecting very
small areas. I persisted and they didn't. However, the melodeon player
in our band went on them a few months later, and she did suffer from
muscle pain sufficiently badly that she stopped taking them. This was
during her "miserable cow" period, so exactly how bad it was in absolute
terms I wouldn't like to guess.

For me, two or three days after starting them IIRC. I was aware of them
but it was mild discomfort rather than severe pain, so I didn't cry off
the statins but gave them a chance. As for cause, I have no idea.
