I agree, there are certainly lots of woffle majors on there! But there
are some interesting videos, and not all are major wofflers - there's
one I've looked at quite a few of who makes quite short ones (often
about things I didn't think I wanted to know about but found
interesting) - IIRR he's called Tom Scott. And another one called
Techmoan, about the history (and technology) of various audio/video
technologies. And another called something Connections, whose videos
always look to be too long to just be about what the title suggests, but
which I find when I watch them quite interesting.
Certainly, the ones showing you how to do something to a specific item -
replace the screen on an Acer laptop, or get at the door mechanism on a
Å koda - do often take ages to get to it. But still, they do show you,
and as you say it's easy to skip.

Despite the ad.s, and the woffle, I think YouTube is a great resource.
And for finding old video of music, it's unequalled I think: I must have
hundreds now of Nana Mouskouri, Mireille Mathieu, Julie Andrews, ...
(though Mimi is queen of "le playback" as the French call it - i. e. she
nearly always mimes, so performances are of a lot fewer actual
recordings - but then she acts the songs very visually. And is of course
very nice to look at).

My spell checker wants to change woffle to waffle. I thought the latter
was the batter grids, and the former the chuntering; I'm probably wrong.

Possibly primed by the preceding "do battle with", momentarily IRTA
"I've had the ack-ack".

I succeeded with a complaint to ASA, years ago. There's nothing much to it,
if the complainee isn't going to be able to provide adequate substantiating
evidence.

I've been using it for a while. Do you use the -F option, to enable you to
select from all the available formats? I'm still occasionally downloading
what turns out to be a silent video, but that's probably my own lack
of care.

It depends what you mean by "succeed". I too have had "success" in the
past, if that is taken as meaning they uphold the complaint; it's what
they _do_ that's usually disappointing - the usual is a commitment from
the advertiser not to run that ad. again without modifying it. I don't
think I've ever succeeded in getting anyone fined, or even just forced
to publish a retraction. On the whole, they _state_ that their aim is
mostly to control advertising in that way, rather than to punish, which
I'm sure isn't what most of we public would like their attitude to be.

On the whole, I mainly now use -F (shortly followed by -f, of course!)
only when I find I've downloaded something that doesn't play on my
system - two films from the BBC were the last examples. (I went for the
next resolution down.) Usually, I just use the default, which I think
goes for the best (audio and video) available. (Even for music-only
tracks - I extract the audio afterwards; I've built up muscle memory
that's quicker than doing the -F/-f dance. Also, if it's a music track
with static record sleeve shown, I sometimes run the downloaded through
VLC briefly just to take a snap thereof before extracting the audio and
deleting the "video".)

I note in passing that my email client of choice, KMail, is currently at
release 5.19.3. Emacs, which I use in conjunction with Gnus to read
umra, is on release 27.1 but then Emacs has been around in one form or
another for nearly 50 years.

The whole major version inflation with Mozilla, and with Chrome (now at
version 120) really annoys me. I can understand lots of security updates
but not anything up to eight new major versions a year.

Who are they trying to impress? Especially as one major version seldom
seems much different from the previous one?

Yes, it _is_ irritating.

I think it's partly that what would in the past have been minor updates
are now major as there's not really anyone in control, and partly that
if they call it a major update, they don't have to worry about backwards
compatibility as much as they used to.

I can remember a time when thae advice was never to trust any software
with a version number lower than 3 or higher than 10. Then Knuth started
his habit of incrementing the version number of TeX by adding another
digit to the approximation approaching \pi from below and the same for
Metafont with e.

No.

I do recall when my Chromecast was responsible for knocking out the
broadband and an engineer visit was needed - but could find nothing
wrong. As he could find nothing wrong I turned everything off and it
was only when I reconnected the Chromecast did the broadband go down.

Thunderbird releases are no longer sequential, they appear to have
jumped from 90 something to 100 something to 110 something (115). I am
not sure how the numbers are derived - I expect if you google somewhere
you can be told.

I use "4k Video Downloader" which is pretty user-friendly. It suits my
"I just want a copy of this - I don't wish to spend several hours
learning a command set which will almost achieve what I need"
attitude.
I am willing to spend time learning some topics, but there are plenty
more occasions when I want a utility to 'util' without any fuss or bother.

I think I tried that; certainly I tried one with a GUI interface, and
that name rings a faint bell.

I've nowhere near learnt y's "command set": nine times out of ten
(actually a lot more than that), just the default works fine - no
commands, no parameters other than the URL of the page containing the
video (and that works for most such pages - YouTube, BBC Sounds, and
more or less any other I've tried). Knowing y _has_ a command set for
the rare time I need it is fine.

y (my rename of yt-dlp) does that for me. If 4KVD does for you, that's
fine too.

So am I. I have been googling a replacement for a particular bit of kit
(it is about 5 years old and contains hard drives and is not as fast as
it used to be - but that applies to me as well) and suspiciously
everything in the study is playing up - the PC, the printer, the ipad
(to the point of consulting Apple support), a couple of hard drives, but
not the bit of kit which was going to be replaced.

My TV can record programs. I found it can also play back a program
whilst recording it. If I am rash enough to watch a movie (for example)
with adverty things I record it then, about 30 minutes later or as
convenient, I start to watch the recording and fast forward over the
annoyances. My watching ends when or soon after the broadcast does and
I've saved the time of my delayed start.

In the beginning, Emacs created God.

There was a time when Manchester taxis could charge extra if they
crossed the city boundary, and the boundaries of the city are drawn so
weirdly[1] that it was all too easy for your taxi to stray, whether by
accident or design. I am <cough> sure that this anomaly has now being
rectified, if only by the threat of Uber.

Rosie

[1] My theory for this, and even for the continued existence of Salford
as a discreet political entity even though you can't see the join, is
that the grandees of 19th century London were terrified of Manchester's
wealth (from Trade, for heaven's sake) and its reputation for
radicalism, and cut it down to size. Unlike Birmingham, which had a lot
of bits added to it over the decades, Manchester had bits lopped off:
Reddish and Levenshulme to Stockport, Failsworth to Oldham and so
on. Instead of the organic major city of 3 million plus it really is,
the city is contrained within a boundary that looks suspicious like a
salamander enclosing fewer than half a million people. Divide and rule!
